When we show understanding to others, we interpret their bad behavior in a way that they often cannot articulate themselves. We examine the “why” behind their actions. Understanding does not excuse bad behavior. What it does do is humanize and contextualize it. Understanding makes it easier to love people who do not seem to deserve it and would never otherwise receive it from the world.

    • Judgment is often an impediment to understanding. However, I also believe we can say “This was a wrong response,” while appreciating the factors that led to it. This is the approach I take with myself. I do not condemn myself for any past decisions, but I still identify some of them as wrong.
