Some people are by nature more sensitive than others. Sensitivity, to be sure, is not always a bad thing. Some sensitive people experience empathy and compassion more than their non-sensitive counterparts.
However, there is another kind of sensitivity that is the result of emotional trauma. After experiencing some trauma, we get sensitized to various environmental triggers, real or imagined, that remind us of our trauma or threaten us with its repeat. This kind of sensitivity is designed to protect us, but it is not virtuous in and of itself.
