It is often difficult to show honor to people who are close to us, because we are acquainted firsthand with their flaws. Ironically, only honor that is personal and up-close has any real power. To honor someone we do not know is to make a judgment without facts. To receive honor from someone who does not know us can feel hollow and inauthentic. Given that no one is perfect, and honor requires getting to know people, honor is evidence of a mature character.
