We tend to treat people the way we treat ourselves. If we are harsh and critical toward ourselves, we will be harsh and crirical toward others. Even when we are people-pleasing on the outside (people-pleasing for most people is just a way to escape anxiety), lurking beneath the surface of our shallow niceness is that same critical spirit. The truth is that the better we love and treat ourselves, the more powerful the golden rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you—becomes.
