When we treat the symptom and not its cause, we delay its inevitable return. For example, if I have a lust issue rooted in emotional trauma and a disloyal heart, abstaining from lust in the short term will not solve my problem. Make no mistake, it is important to immediately put an end to a toxic habit as a prequisite for healing and growth. However, unless I address my problem emotions and deeper heart issues, I will never experience long-term success. At best, I will only replace one toxic habit with another.
