When people talk bad about us, they often do so without good reason. However, for every such example, there are numerous wrong things we have thought, said, or done in private that never affected our public reputation. Recognizing this can make it easier to let go of offense, even in the face of people with bad intentions. It’s like a criminal who gets convicted of a crime he didn’t do, while not getting prosecuted for numerous others he did do because there was a lack of evidence. The people responsible for the false conviction are wrong, but the criminal himself is not a victim in the grand scheme.
