If you want someone to trust you, approach them in a one-on-one setting. In a debate, conflict, or situation where you want maximum credibility, one-on-one (and often face-to-face) is the way to go.
When there are other people watching (group chat or live conversation), there is always a “pretense of performance.” The person can’t be sure your words or actions aren’t being influenced by how you want others to perceive you.
