Self-deprecation after a relapse has the dual effect of exacerbating negative emotions, on one hand, and strengthening the impulse to escape them, on the other. In other words, self-deprecation increases the probability of future relapse. Feeling bad after the fact—for most of us, dare I say—takes care of itself. We do well when we put that energy into getting smarter and better rather than magnifying it via self-deprecation.
